The club meets every Friday from 8 to 11 pm at the the Christ Church Centre on Magdalen Road (NR3 4LA), opposite the Whalebone pub. There is a large car park in front of the Centre. It is on bus routes 13 and 13C, and in walking distance of 11 and 11A bus stops on Sprowston Road. Guest nights, showcases and song sessions are all currently being held downstairs, in the main hall. Bring a bottle – teas and coffee always available in the kitchen.
Friday folk song sessions
We have a weekly folk song session, hosted by a club or guest MC, with a wide mixture of tunes and songs. Entry is free and we welcome all performers – there is no need to reserve a slot. Our definition of ‘folk’ is broad and we appreciate every contribution. But there is no pressure to take part – we also welcome everyone who enjoys listening to live acoustic music. Themed evenings crop up every so often as an extra challenge!
The popular showcase nights give invited performers a chance to spread their wings in a couple of longer spots within the song session. Entry is also free on these nights.
We book a variety of well known and up-and-coming local, national and international performers on a monthly basis and make a reasonable charge for those nights, with reductions for club members. Current ticket price for members is usually £8 (£11 for non-members).
Membership runs from the beginning of February to the end of January and is now due for 2017-18. The fee is £10 and new members can join on any club night.
This year the club is being run by a committee of ten people, elected by members. The current chair is Martin McDonnell and the secretary is Bridget Lely.
We book a limited number of performers, usually several months in advance.
