About the club

Friday meetings

The club meets every Friday at the the Christ Church Centre on Magdalen Road (NR3 4LA), opposite the Whalebone pub. There is a large car park in front of the Centre, which does sometimes become congested and if so, you can park in nearby streets to the north of the Centre. It is on bus routes 13 and 13C, and in walking distance of 11 and 11A bus stops on Sprowston Road. Guest nights and song sessions are held in the main hall, which is wheelchair accessible. Bring your own drinks, and teas and coffee are available in the kitchen. Disabled toilet available.

Friday folk song sessions

We have a weekly folk song session from 7 to 10 pm, hosted by a club or guest MC, with a wide mixture of tunes and songs. We welcome all performers – there is no need to reserve a slot. Our definition of ‘folk’ is broad and we appreciate every contribution. But there is no pressure to take part – we also welcome everyone who enjoys listening to live acoustic music. Themed evenings crop up every so often as an extra challenge, but there is no obligation to follow the theme – we enjoy convoluted connections! There is a tip jar to help with our weekly expenses and we suggest a donation of £2.

Guest nights

We book a variety of well known and up-and-coming local, national and international performers on a monthly basis and make a reasonable charge for those nights, usually with reductions for club members. Current ticket price is usually £13 for non-members and £10 for club members, but there are occasional variations to this. Guest nights now run from 7.30–10.15 pm. Please email us via the contact page if you would like to come to a guest night.

Membership

Membership runs from the beginning of February to the end of January. Membership for 2024–5 is now available and can be paid on any Friday. The fee remains at £10.

Norwich Folk Club only uses members’ email data for contact about club events and folk-related information. No data is shared with any person or organisation without the member’s permission.

Committee

The club is currently being run by a committee of seven people, elected by members. The chair is Ted Briggs-Comstock and the secretary is Bridget Lely.

Bookings

We book a limited number of performers, usually several months in advance, and receive a large number of requests. In general we prefer to book people we know or who have been recommended to us.
