Iceni Rising showcase at session on Friday 29 November

The folk song session on Friday 29 November features two spots from Iceni Rising, a new local trio comprising Jaki on cello, flute and vocals, Pete on fiddle, banjo, guitar and vocals, and Dave on sax.

Iceni Rising play an eclectic mix of acoustic songs and tunes, some ancient and some modern. Entry is free and all are welcome to come along to the session, whether to sing, play or listen. Bring your own drinks. Teas and coffee are available in the kitchen.

‘Norfolk Songs’ at the session on Friday 28 June

Following the stunning success of recent themed folk sessions, on Friday 28 June we look forward to an entertaining evening of ‘Norfolk Songs’ led by Brian Gaudet, host of Uncle Walter’s Music Nights at the Orchard Gardens in North Walsham.

Shake out your dwiles, seek out your favourite Norfolk ditties and tunes, and bring a bottle or check out one of the local pubs or off-licences. And there’s always coffee and a choice of teas in the kitchen. Free entry.

 

Annual General Meeting on 8 February

Norwich Folk Club Annual General Meeting will take place at 8 pm on Friday 8 February. The club is run by a committee, who will report on the events of the past year. All club members are invited to attend the meeting. This will be followed by a singaround, open to all listeners, singer and players, from about 9 pm. Bring your own refreshments – teas and coffee available.

Showcase with Poacher on 1 February

Special showcase guests at the singaround on Friday 1 February are popular local trio, June Thaine, David Robertson and Kevin Green, otherwise known as Poacher. We look forward to hearing a variety of traditional and more recent songs, sung in close harmony.

Other singers and players are also welcome to take part in the singaround. Entry free. Please bring your own liquid refreshments – teas and coffee available.

Zimmer Follies on 25 May

At the singaround showcase downstairs on Friday 25 May we are very pleased to welcome back the ever-youthful Zimmer Follies, an occasional group of much-loved stalwarts of the Norfolk folk scene. Mauny Wood is joined by Peter Colman, John Mathews, Colin Tait and Roger and Chris Gamble. Not to be missed! Free entry. Bring your own refreshments.

Singarounds continue every Friday upstairs at the Christ Church Centre, with a special evening on Friday 1 June on the theme of ‘Kings and Queens’. All welcome, whether to listen, play or sing. Free entry.

John Ward and Mario Price on 23 March

John Ward and Mario Price

Local performers John Ward and Mario Price join us as showcase guests at the singaround on Friday 23 March. An accomplished singer-songwriter and musician, John Ward has just released his sixth album ‘East of the Sunrise’, a collection of songs from East Anglia.

John is a fine guitarist and also plays several other instruments, most notably the bodhran. He often works solo, but also plays regularly with his musical partner, outstanding violinist Mario Price. Together they perform a highly eclectic mix of John’s original compositions, popular, standard and traditional songs and Mario’s beautiful and high energy instrumentals.

Fridays 17 and 24 February

Summer singarounds

There will be singarounds every Friday throughout the summer, with ‘Games and Pastimes’ as the theme on Friday 22 July and ‘Murder and Mayhem’ on Friday 19 August. Songs and tunes connected with the theme will be appreciated, but some leeway is allowed! Everyone is welcome to all singarounds, whether to sing, play or listen, and entry is free. Bring refreshments. Hot drinks available.

Singarounds with local showcases in November

During November, singarounds continue every Friday, throughout the month, with two special showcase nights with extended spots featuring local folk performers. Free entry. Bring your own refreshments. Tea and coffee available.

On 12 November, we welcome the return of a group of folk stars, known to us as the ‘Zimmer Follies’. Familiar faces on the local folk scene, they come together to present a variety of songs, tunes and other treats in what promises to be a memorable night.

On 26 November, the local showcase features the accomplished singing of June Thaine, David Robertson and Kevin Green. June and David are joined in close harmony by Kevin in a new collaboration, known collectively as Poacher’.
