Moore Moss Rutter on Friday 13 January

mmrOn Friday 13 January we welcome the first guests of 2017, Moore Moss Rutter. A series of remarkable gigs has heightened the sense of anticipation around the reunion of Jack Rutter (Seth Lakeman Band), Tom Moore (False Lights) and Archie Churchill-Moss (Beyond the Marches) in the trio that won them the 2011 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award. The intervening years have seen them play with some of the biggest and best acts in English folk music, and now they reconvene to release the follow-up to their much acclaimed debut album.

Widely regarded as three of the best players of traditional folk amongst a precociously gifted generation, their music features ancient traditional material from Britain as well as newly composed tunes and songs, and focuses on their own movements from the countryside to large cities, and the contrasts that come into play.

Tania Opland and Mike Freeman on Friday 16 May

On Friday 16 May we welcome back Anglo-Alaskan duo Tania Opland and Mike Freeman, whose repertoire starts from a base in the traditional musics of North America and the British Isles, spreads through most of Northern Europe and touches on other cultures around the globe. The array of musical instruments includes a rare Eskimo violin, mandolin, hammered dulcimer, djembe, double ocarina and hurdy-gurdy, along with more common instruments such as guitar, recorder and, of course, voice.

Special guests on Friday 10 May are folk duo Belshazzar’s Feast, accordionist Paul Hutchinson and singer, oboe and violin player Paul Sartin. Paul Sartin is a member of BBC 2 Award-winning big band Bellowhead and of Faustus. Paul Hutchinson is a member of the progressive folk trio Hoover the Dog.

 

Belshazzar’s Feast start with traditional folk music, add a touch of classical and jazz, throw in a bit of pop and music hall, and top it off wry humour for a unique live experience.  They received a coveted nomination for the Best Duo Award at the 2010 BBC Folk Awards. ‘One of folk’s great odd couples – The Feast’ (The Independent on Sunday).

Their latest album, titled ‘Find The Lady’ and produced by Jim Moray, was released by One Little Indian Records in November 2010. ‘It is a bona fide English classic’ (R2, formerly Rock ‘n’ Reel).

Folk song sessions continue every Friday between guest nights, with a themed evening of ‘Love Songs’ led by June Thaine on Friday 19 April. Free entry. All welcome, whether to listen, sing or play.

The Norwich Folk Club’s Annual General Meeting will be held from 8 pm on Friday 26 April, followed by a folk song session from about 9 pm.

 

 

New Year’s Eve Party

Norwich Folk Club continues to meet every Friday, with a singaround on Friday 28 December in the upstairs room, as usual. Everyone is welcome, whether to listen, sing or play.

On Monday 31 December we are holding our New Year’s Eve Party, with lots of songs and tunes. (Unfortunately the band is indisposed and not able to play for dancing this year.) Free entry. Bring songs, tunes, and party pieces, as well as your own drinks and some food to share. Prizes also welcomed for the grand Christmas raffle. Come along and join the festivities!

Our guest performer, Bob Wood, hails from the west of Scotland but is based nowadays in London. A warm and engaging solo singer and performer with an easy going sense of humour, he is known also as a highly accomplished finger style guitarist. Exploring a range of open tunings, his playing and song interpretations have been described as displaying a rare sensitivity, lightness of touch and great technique.

Bob’s regular repertoire nowadays retains firm links with the tradition, but includes also a splendid array of more contemporary songs. Expect therefore to hear material ranging from Robert Burns to Pete Morton; from Archie Fisher to Hank Williams; plus a smattering of pipe, harp and other tunes on guitar.

Sandy Brechin and Ewan Wilkinson on 22 June

Sandy Brechin and Ewan Wilkinson

Sandy Brechin is regarded as one of the most innovative exponents of the Scottish accordion. He has toured the world extensively with “Seelyhoo”, “Burach”, “The Sandy Brechin Band” and his ever popular ceilidh band “The Sensational Jimi Shandrix Experience”. Sandy was nominated in the best instrumentalist category at the 2011 Scottish Trad Awards.

Ewan Wilkinson was brought up the Scottish Borders, and has a strong grounding in the Scottish song tradition as well as a unique insight into the music south of the border. He is both an emotive singer and an articulate guitarist. Ewan has been hailed as an important new young talent of the folk scene. His debut album ‘Lost in the Day’ was released in 2009.

Ewan and Sandy have been touring together for eight years playing in folk clubs, festivals and acoustic venues throughout the UK as well as in the Middle East and Australia. The duo plays a mixture of Scottish, Irish and English traditional songs and tunes, together with contemporary folk songs, and original compositions.

Jessica Lamb

Support is from Jessica Lamb, a young Northumbrian Piper and singer who was a finalist at New Roots 2012. Tutored by Kathryn Tickell, Jessica was also a semi-finalist at the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards 2011 and 2012 and in 2012 played and taught at Towersey Festival. This summer Jessica will be representing folk music by playing with Folkestra at the opening of the Olympics in Trafalgar Square.

Zimmer Follies on 25 May

At the singaround showcase downstairs on Friday 25 May we are very pleased to welcome back the ever-youthful Zimmer Follies, an occasional group of much-loved stalwarts of the Norfolk folk scene. Mauny Wood is joined by Peter Colman, John Mathews, Colin Tait and Roger and Chris Gamble. Not to be missed! Free entry. Bring your own refreshments.

Singarounds continue every Friday upstairs at the Christ Church Centre, with a special evening on Friday 1 June on the theme of ‘Kings and Queens’. All welcome, whether to listen, play or sing. Free entry.

The Trio Threlfall on 13 April

Sisters Jane and Amanda Threlfall are joined by musician Roger Edwards in fresh and vibrant interpretations of traditional English folk songs: ‘Sometimes delicate, sometimes bold, sometimes beguiling, sometimes refined but always with an ear to the nature of the song’ (English Song and Dance). Their harmonies have been described as ‘faultless’ (Cheltenham Folk Festival). Accompaniment is on bouzouki, fiddle and guitar, augmented by the skillful concertina playing of Roger Edwards.

The trio’s latest album ‘Sweet Nightingale’ was hailed by Mike Harding as being ‘absolutely beautiful. John Ward and Mario Price on 23 March

John Ward and Mario Price

Local performers John Ward and Mario Price join us as showcase guests at the singaround on Friday 23 March. An accomplished singer-songwriter and musician, John Ward has just released his sixth album ‘East of the Sunrise’, a collection of songs from East Anglia.

John is a fine guitarist and also plays several other instruments, most notably the bodhran. He often works solo, but also plays regularly with his musical partner, outstanding violinist Mario Price. Together they perform a highly eclectic mix of John’s original compositions, popular, standard and traditional songs and Mario’s beautiful and high energy instrumentals.

Singarounds with local showcases in November

During November, singarounds continue every Friday, throughout the month, with two special showcase nights with extended spots featuring local folk performers. Free entry. Bring your own refreshments. Tea and coffee available.

On 12 November, we welcome the return of a group of folk stars, known to us as the ‘Zimmer Follies’. Familiar faces on the local folk scene, they come together to present a variety of songs, tunes and other treats in what promises to be a memorable night.

On 26 November, the local showcase features the accomplished singing of June Thaine, David Robertson and Kevin Green. June and David are joined in close harmony by Kevin in a new collaboration, known collectively as ‘Poacher’.
