Pagoda Project on Friday 3 July

Pagoda Project unites three standout UK artists: accordionist, composer, educator Paul Hutchinson, with clarinettist, bass clarinettist, composer Karen Wimhurst, and fiddle-singer Hannah Cumming. Rooted in tradition yet restlessly inventive, this is a trio specialising in original material, cut through with improvisation and song.

“Paul Hutchinson’s utterly reliable and infinitely thoughtful accordion accompaniments, combined with Hannah Cumming’s most wonderful ‘folky’ voice and the delivery of the percussive drive one yearns to hear from a fiddle-player were a joy. But with the addition of Karen Wimhurst’s divine clarinet/bass clarinet improvised bass lines, one felt all of a sudden that this might be as good as small scale modern English Folk Music performance ever gets …”

Jackie Oates and Mike Cosgrave on Friday 10 October

Jackie Oates is a folk singer, song-writer and musician. A central figure in English traditional music, Jackie is regarded as one of the country’s best loved folk performers. Her 8th solo studio album, Gracious Wings, took flight in September 2022, receiving acclaim from the music press both within and beyond the folk genre.

In the 14 years since her iconic coming of age album Hyperboreans, Jackie has continued to build her large and varied following, write her own material, include surprising covers into her albums and breathe new life into the traditional gems she unearths.

Jackie collaborates with a diverse array of artists. She was a member of The Imagined Village with Eliza & Martin Carthy and Billy Bragg among others; the band performed at festivals in 2022 including Beautiful Days. In Norwich, Jackie will be accompanied by Mike Cosgrave (piano, accordion, guitar).

Winter Wilson on Friday 11 July

Kip Winter and Dave Wilson bring a sense of intimacy to every venue, blending superb, often hard-hitting original songs, stunning harmonies and musicianship with sometimes hilarious humour and tales of life on the road. Kip (vocals, accordion, guitar, flute) ​”simply has a voice to die for” (​John Roffey, Maverick Magazine), whilst Dave (vocals, guitar and banjo) is now rightly recognised as being amongst the top tier of British songwriters, with his songs sung in folk clubs across the UK and beyond. Together, their voices are sublime.

Jim Causley on Friday 13 September

More than simply a folk-singer, multi-award-winning singer-songwriter and musician Jim Causley is an all-round entertainer and his concerts give a full night of beautiful singing, moving ballads, hilarious ditties and everything in between. Drawing equally from traditional repertoire, modern songs as well as his own compositions and settings of poems by his relative, the celebrated Cornish poet Charles Causley. All accompanied on piano and various accordions and served with a gurt dollop of Westcountry humour, an evening with Jim is an evening not to be missed!

Since the release of his debut album in 2005, Causley’s unique voice and persona have helped him become one of the most well-loved and respected figures of today’s contemporary roots and folk scene. West country father of folk Geoff Lakeman described Causley as possessing ‘a voice in a million‘ in a recent interview in the Western Morning News, some accolade indeed!

Teyr on Friday 9 June

Described by Folk Radio UK as “High-energy brilliance”, James Patrick Gavin, Dominic Henderson and Tommie Black-Roff are three of the UK’s finest new breed of folk musician. Their folk trio TEYR (‘3’ in the Cornish language) evolved out of London’s thriving session scene; that, by combining bothy ballads, focsle shanties, folk tunes and Irish poetry, their trademark blend of voices and instruments draws links between the many sounds of the British and Celtic Isles, as well as the Nordic countries.

Having honed their craft over the best part of a decade, they thrive on weaving their diverse threads together by using close vocal harmonies, fiddle, uilleann pipes, guitar, low whistle and accordion, to characterise themselves and the influences of the great folk musicians who’ve come before.

Martyn Wyndham-Read and Iris Bishop on Friday 10 February

Martyn Wyndham-Read has been involved with folk music for over 40 years. In his late teens he left his mother’s farm in Sussex and headed off, with his guitar, to Australia where he worked on a sheep station in South Australia. It was while he was there that he heard, first hand, the old songs sung by some of the station hands at Emu Springs and he became captivated by these songs and the need to know more of them and where they came from grew.

Martyn moved to Melbourne and became part of the folk song revival there and throughout Australia during the early1960s. Based back in the UK, he has toured worldwide, performing a variety of traditional and contemporary songs. Martyn is accompanied by fantastic box player Iris Bishop: Where Ravens Feed

Coracle on Friday 25 November

On Friday 25 November we look forward to welcoming Coracle, a new group bringing together the talents, imagination and creativity of three artists with vastly different backgrounds, who have come together through their love of traditional music cut through with experimentation, boldness, humour and risk. Be thrilled by the silvern voice of Anna Tam, the free-flowing mix of reeds … clarinet and accordion … cello, nyckelharpa, viola da gamba and hurdy-gurdy.

Accordionist Paul Hutchinson is a BBC Folk Award Best Live nominee (Belshazzar’s Feast), Karen Wimhurst is an accomplished clarinet player and composer, and Anna Tam, shortlisted as Fatea’s 2021 Instrumentalist of the Year and a former Mediaeval Baebe, brings a range of other instruments as well as her ‘gin-pure’ voice.

Song session showcase on Friday 6 September

Colin & Malle are a husband and wife duo who have only been playing together for about five years, though married for over 40.  Colin (lead vocals, guitar, piano) and Malle (backing vocals, accordion, piano) will be performing songs written by Colin, which can loosely be described as social commentary and protest songs.

Colin & Malle will be performing two extended spots within the song session. This is a free event. Please bring your own drinks, songs and tunes. Teas and coffee available in the kitchen.

2018 has been a great year for Winter Wilson. Their tour with folk-rock legends Fairport Convention was an outstanding success and their new album ‘Far Off on the Horizon’ is their best selling to date. Now in their 6th year as full-time musicians, Kip Winter and Dave Wilson bring a sense of intimacy, blending superb, often hard-hitting original songs, stunning harmonies and musicianship with sometimes hilarious tales of life on the road.

Every show is different. Kip (vocals, accordion, guitar, flute) ‘simply has a voice to die for’ (John Roffey, Maverick Magazine), whilst Dave (vocals, guitar and banjo) is now recognised as being amongst the top tier of British songwriters, with his songs covered by some of folk’s ‘greats’. 

Sam Brothers

Support is provided by New Roots finalist 2018, Sam Brothers, a talented 24-year-old singer-songwriter based in the South of England, who has spent the last two years busking and playing in a variety of venues, including music festivals. Sam’s songs are invested with echoes of Dylan, Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake and Van Zandt and his first album, ‘Farewell to My Old Days‘ was released in 2017.
