John Robinson

John Robinson

In featured spots at the singaround at the Manor Rooms on 27 March, the showcase guest will be John Robinson. Welcomed in folk clubs all over the country as ‘John the Trucker’, he has been chair of the Norwich club for the last four years. Originally from MIddlesbrough,  John brings a wealth of songs – of Northern mining disasters and docklands, racing pigeons and allotments, children’s games and bargains with the devil. The Manor Rooms are just up the road from the White Horse Inn. Bring your own refreshments – coffee and tea available. Entry is free and everyone is welcome to come along.

Well established and much respected harmony singers Barrie and Ingrid Temple will be guests at the club on 13 March. Their songs are traditional, with original arrangements and accompaniment by Barrie on English concertina and guitar. They also sing Barrie’s original songs, written in the traditional style, many of which have been recorded by other performers.

Kiss the Mistress on 27 February!

Kiss the Mistress

Showcase guests at the singaround on 27 February will be Kiss the Mistress, a popular local trio combining a rare mix of voice, cello, accordion and bodhran. Entry is free and everyone is welcome to come along.

Club officers John Robinson (chair), Bridget Lely (secretary), Fred Brown (treasurer) and Linda Robinson (membership secretary) were asked by the AGM to continue for a further year. Other committee members for 2009-10 are: Judy Bedder, Keith Ellison, Andrea Granville, Brian O’Neill, Caroline Peel and Kelly Woods. The AGM joined John in welcoming Andrea and Caroline to the committee and in thanking retiring committee members Les Ellis and Mick Selvey for all their work on the club’s behalf.

Members commented that guest nights in the past year had been really enjoyable and that they particularly like the wide variety of acoustic music styles at singarounds nowadays.

Membership for 2009-10 is now due and remains at £6. To benefit from reduced ticket prices on guest nights and receive regular updates on club news, download the membership form, or contact the membership secretary on any club night.

AGM and singaround on 20 February

The Annual General Meeting for members of the club will begin at 8 pm. This is the opportunity for the current committee to report to members about activities during the past year and discuss plans for the coming year – and elections for all committee posts will be held. The meeting is followed by a singaround, which should begin around 9 pm and is open to everyone as usual.

Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer on 6 February

Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer

Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer

Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer are acknowledged as “one of the best young duos around on the folk scene today” (Famous Willows Folk Club).  Although best known for their instrumental skills with Scottish smallpipes, accordion and even Swedish Nyckelharpa, the duo are well recognised for their song arrangements too.  With their blend of traditional material and contemporary interpretations, they have developed a sound that is both familiar and fresh.

‘Changes’ – themed singaround

Themed singarounds always bring a variety of unexpected treats, and the suggestion of ‘Changes’ allows for all kinds of possibilities. This started with the idea of shape-shifting, but of course there are many other ways of interpreting the concept in song – not to mention the potential for changes in performers’ habits – a monologue from a ‘listener’ perhaps, a tune from a singer or  the exciting birth of a new combo – however you choose to take the theme! Free entry, as usual on singaround nights.

Tony Hall on 9 January

We look forward very much to welcoming local celebrity, melodeon player and modest wit Tony Hall to the Folk Club on Friday 9 January. Tickets £4 (£2 members). Summed up by Islington Folk Club: ‘East Anglian melodeon player with a distinctive, quintessentially English style, who played on the iconic ’80s Nic Jones release ‘Penguin Eggs’. Hall’s sets are laid-back affairs, interspersed with his dry, sometimes gently surreal humour.’ See the EDP article online from 19 June 2008: ‘Tony draws on squeezebox skills’, where there is also a video.

New Year’s Eve

Club members and friends are all invited to join us at our New Year’s Eve ceilidh and singaround at the Christ Church Centre on Magdalen Road, Norwich from 8.30 pm. Shufflewing will form the core of the band and will welcome assistance from all comers, with Chris Davis as the caller. Fancy dress optional. Bring your own liquid refreshment, and a little food to share would be appreciated – tea and coffee available. Entry free – with a grand raffle, if you would like to contribute a prize.

Manor Rooms on 5 December

With apologies from our landlord Andy for the late notice, please note that the venue for Friday 5 December will be the Manor Rooms, just up the Street from the White Horse Inn. Bring your own refreshments or buy drinks at the pub. Tea and coffee will also be available. Everyone is welcome, whether to listen or to take part.
