Jimmy Aldridge & Sid Goldsmith-6Jimmy Aldridge and Sid Goldsmith are a highly acclaimed folk duo who play traditional and original music of the British Isles.

Over the last three years they have built a reputation on the UK folk scene for arresting and moving performances. The songs themselves are always given centre stage but they are brought to life with sensitive musical arrangements and stunning vocals. There is an integrity that shines through their performances and a common thread of political struggle, resistance and justice.

Jimmy and Sid have been heavily influenced by the songs and singers of East Anglia, where they both grew up, but their music also reflects the diversity of voices within the folk world. Shallow Brown/Jackie Tar

Lady Maisery on Friday 4 November

lady-maisery2Lady Maisery, who were nominated for the ‘Horizon’ BBC Folk Award 2012 and for ‘Best Debut’ at the Spiral Awards 2012, comprise Hannah James (Kerfuffle, duo with Sam Sweeney), Hazel Askew (The Askew Sisters, The Artisans) and Rowan Rheingans (Fidola). The trio explore vocal harmony through fresh interpretations of songs and ballads, and each member is also an accomplished instrumentalist, together creating a rich tapestry of fiddle, banjo, harp, concertina, accordion and foot percussion.

Lady Maisery are also one of the foremost English proponents of traditional mouth music, or ‘diddling’, a form of singing without words. Over the last five years, the trio have released two critically acclaimed albums (five stars in the Financial Times, Album of the Week in The Independent), made many appearances on national radio and toured widely, performing sell-out shows across the UK and Europe. Lady Maisery’s third album is to be released in autumn 2016.

The Changing Room on Friday 26 February

TCR-GROUP-DERRY-WALLSA rare opportunity to catch up with The Changing Room on tour. The phenomenally busy Sam Kelly and Tanya Brittain will be joined on stage by Jamie Francis (Stark), Evan Carson (The Willows) and harpist Morrigan Palmer-Brown.
In the short time that they’ve been recording together The Changing Room have built up a significant catalogue of music, and clocked-up some impressive airtime on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 3. Their debut album was included in The Telegraph list of ‘Best Folk Albums of 2015’.
With rootsy, Celtic-infused, original folk, heavily influenced by the industrial heritage of Cornwall, this Looe-based band are ambassadors for collaboration. Their songs feature rousing choruses and catchy hooks. Accordion, guitar, bodhran, harp and banjo plus award-winning vocals deliver a winning combination, and unique sound.

The Norwich Folk Club Annual General Meeting will take place from 8 pm on Friday 12 February, to be followed at about 9 pm by a song session open to all.
On Friday 19 February  the song session will run from 8 pm till 11 pm (not 8.30–11.30).

Steve Turner on Friday 4 September

Steve_Turner-DSC1355Steve Turner is known as a pioneer of highly sophisticated English concertina song accompaniments, stretching the boundaries of traditional forms, with one of the best voices in the business. He is a multi-instrumentalist, who also accompanies himself on the cittern and plays mandolin and banjo.

In the F/Roots August/September 2014 edition Nancy Kerr in her “Rocket Launcher” interview when asked “what was the best gig you ever saw?” answered “the best spot I’ve seen recently was Steve Turner – total intensive musical focus and a vast serious repertoire”.

BarberSistersIn support will be Isobel, Lydia and Ellie Barber – a string trio from the village of Thorpe in the Peak District. They began learning classical violin at the age of 5, and started playing folk music together after first participating in Folkworks Summer Schools a few years ago. With a particular love for Scottish folk music, the Barber Sisters have been influenced by bands such as RANT, and enjoy playing arrangements of original and traditional tunes on fiddle and viola. They were one of the 10 acts shortlisted for the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award 2015 and were also finalists at New Roots 2015.

Pete Coe_0166 black corner smallSinger, songwriter, melodeon, banjo, dulcimer and bouzouki player, Pete Coe has very kindly stepped into the breach to perform at the club on Friday 5 December, after news of Roy Bailey’s illness.

A fine solo performer and writer of powerful songs, some with a markedly political edge, Pete Coe has been active on the folk scene since the 1970s and is one of the most committed, most versatile, most important folk artists in Britain.

Benji Kirkpatrick in Norwich on Friday 12 September

Benji KirkpatrickOur guest on Friday 12 September, Benji Kirkpatrick, is a member of folk big band, ‘Bellowhead’, who play to ever-growing audiences in the UK and abroad. He is also a member of the reformed ‘Faustus’ and has worked extensively with Seth Lakeman.

Benji picks his way up and down the frets of various stringed instruments – mainly guitar, bouzouki, mandolin and banjo. He is also a singer and a songwriter, has made three solo albums and his performances have been described as ‘powerful’.
