Wizz Jones on Friday 10 March

tearooms140The guest on Friday 10 March will be folk and blues singer-songwriter and guitarist Wizz Jones. Admired by many well known folk musicians, including Ralph McTell and Martin Carthy, and top guitarists, such as Eric Clapton and Keith Richards, Wizz Jones has been touring since the 1960s. His best known song, ‘When I leave Berlin’, has been performed by Bruce Springsteen and Wizz himself has been described as ‘one of the finest guitarists you are ever likely to see’ (review of performance at the Green Note, Mark Harrison).

Songman from WarHorse, Bob Fox, on Friday 9 September

Bob Fox SongmanTwice nominated as Best Folk Singer in the BBC Folk Awards, Bob Fox has long been a favourite on the live circuit. Bob played the role of SONGMAN in The National Theatre’s multi-award-winning West End production of WarHorse 2011–13 and subsequently in the highly acclaimed and record-breaking UK, Ireland and South Africa touring version which ended in February 2015. Since then Bob has returned to the concert platform and now presents an ‘Evening with the War Horse Songman’ show.

Join Bob as he performs the songs from WarHorse in their full versions, linked by snippets of the story, with additional material from the BBC Radio Ballad of The Great War and favourites from his own personal repertoire.

Singer-songwriter Colum Sands is the consummate Irish story-teller. This promises to be an evening full of wit, good humour and well loved songs. Colum is a member of the internationally renowned Sands Family from County Down, who recently celebrated 40 years on the road.

On his travels around the world, Colum soon discovered that many of his songs had arrived before him, carried by other singers and in recordings by fellow performers like Andy Irvine, Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy, Roy Bailey, Mick Hanley, Rosemary Woods, Iain McIntosh and Enda Kenny. Don’t miss this rare treat!

The Magical Christmas Tree Tour on 13 December

Pete at FaldingworthThe Magical Christmas Tree Tour is Pete Morton, Emily Sanders, Chris Parkinson and a tree that makes these three unsuspecting folk performers do things they wouldn’t do the other eleven months of the year.

After five successful seasons touring the UK, this show is a festive treat, where the audience pick scrolls from the tree and help to make every night a unique occasion!

This is a high-flying combination: a singer/songwriter extraordinaire, a superb Parky-raged- for webfiddler and one of the folk scene’s most sought-after instrumentalists. Pete, Emily and Chris all excel in their own departments. Together they deliver a richly textured collection of vibrant new songs, beautiful old carols and stunning instrumentals – plus all three voices in three-part harmony … and they have a great time doing it.

On Friday 13 September we look forward to welcoming singer, guitarist and melodeon player Bob Fox, taking a short break before resuming the role of Songman in the touring production of Warhorse.

Described by Warhorse Songmaker John Tams as ‘most probably the last great traditional folksinger we have today’, Bob offers an eclectic mix of thought-provoking songs, including some new material from the BBC Radio Ballads and favourites from his wide repertoire of traditional and modern songs. Expect nimble guitar playing, great singing and a bit of banter – he’s from the North-East, after all! Tickets £10 (£7 for club members). Contact us to reserve seats. Tim Chipping showcase at the session on Friday 14 June

GE DIGITAL CAMERAShowcase guest at the song session on Friday 14 June will be popular local singer, songwriter and guitarist Tim Chipping. Tim is an acoustic musician hailing from the rural depths of Norfolk’s Wensum Valley. He writes and performs his own songs, often very story based and which, whilst acknowledging traditional song forms, are influenced by a variety of contemporary music styles, encompassing themes from the modern world. He also reinterprets traditional songs and puts his own particular stamp on material by current artistes such as Bruce Springsteen, The Levellers and Steve Earle.

In the early 90s Tim co-founded folk rock band Folklaw and, latterly, was one half of acoustic duo Movers and Shakers together with fiddle player Mike Naldrett. Currently, as well as performing solo, Tim sings and plays guitar with Norfolk folk band LongShoreDrift (LSD to their friends!) as well as The Stringdogs, an Anglocana meets Americana acoustic roots collision. His new solo CD, ‘What You Hear Is What You Get’ is out now.

Gren Bartley on 12 April

On Friday 12 April we look forward to welcoming Gren Bartley, a talented young guitarist and a prolific and exceptional songwriter who we first noticed as one of the New Roots finalists several years ago. Since then Gren’s career has blossomed and he is constantly touring and forever writing.

Gren’s new album ‘Winter Fires’ (out in spring 2013) is set to build further upon the success of 2012’s critically acclaimed ‘Songs To Scythe Back The Overgrown’. “A quiet triumph, no less” ( fRoots).

Showcasing his phenomenal guitar playing and poetry-driven lyrics, Gren is truly the future of folk songwriting, using his influences from folk and blues traditions to bring something unique to this modern day troubadour. He is an artist not to be missed. “One to really look out for …” (BBC Radio 2).

Bill Caddick on 14 December

As a special Christmas treat, we look forward to welcoming singer-songwriter Bill Caddick who, among many career highlights, worked with the Albion Band during the production of Larkrise to Candleford and The Passion, and was also a founder member of legendary folk-rock band The Home Service, as well as being the creator of such firm favourites as ‘Unicorns’ and ‘Cloud Factory’.

Bill’s songs have been recorded by the likes of June Tabor, Chris Foster, Alex Campbell, The Yetties, Christy Moore, Peter Rowan, John Kirkpatrick, Artisan, Coope, Boyes and Simpson and many others throughout the world.

We are also very pleased to welcome back the accomplished acoustic singer of traditional songs, Kirsty Bromley, as a support performer.

We first met Kirsty in the guise of babysitter to the stars, when Nancy Kerr and James Fagan were last in Norwich. Since then her singing career has blossomed and, among other exciting achievements, Kirsty was a finalist at the New Roots competition at St Albans in April this year.

Bob Wood on 2 November

Our guest performer, Bob Wood, hails from the west of Scotland but is based nowadays in London. A warm and engaging solo singer and performer with an easy going sense of humour, he is known also as a highly accomplished finger style guitarist. Exploring a range of open tunings, his playing and song interpretations have been described as displaying a rare sensitivity, lightness of touch and great technique.

Bob’s regular repertoire nowadays retains firm links with the tradition, but includes also a splendid array of more contemporary songs. Expect therefore to hear material ranging from Robert Burns to Pete Morton; from Archie Fisher to Hank Williams; plus a smattering of pipe, harp and other tunes on guitar.
