Christmas and Old Year’s Night

Norwich Folk Club welcomes club members and visitors to our Christmas Party song session on Friday 19 December. All singers, tune-players and listeners are very welcome and seasonal party pieces will be particularly appreciated. Please bring your own drinks and a little food to share at the pot luck buffet. This a free event and there will be a grand raffle – prizes of all kinds also very welcome!

FezziwigWe meet to celebrate Old Year’s Night at 8.30 pm on Wednesday 31 December. There will be lots of songs and tunes, as well as a couple of sets of dances with Fezziwig Ceilidh Band. All singers, tune-players and listeners are welcome to join us at this extended session. Bring your own drinks, some food to share and maybe a small quirky prize for the raffle. Tickets are £4 (non-members) and £2 (members).

Free song sessions will be held as usual on Friday 26 December (Boxing Day) and Friday 2 January. Bring your own drinks – teas and coffee available in the kitchen.

Joint song session with Irish guests on Friday 29 August

Sixmilebridge Folk Group May14Special guests for a joint folk club session on Friday 29 August will be a group of members of Sixmilebridge Folk Club from County Clare in Ireland. To enable us to pack in as much music and singing as possible, the evening will start at 8 pm.

Free entry. Raffle prizes will be welcome! Bring your own drinks – fine ales available at local pubs. Teas and coffee in the kitchen.

Song sessions continue every Friday throughout the summer. All welcome to join the fray.

New Roots showcase session on Friday 27 June and harmony workshop on Saturday 28 June

Special guests filling the two spots at the showcase session on Friday 27 June are finalists at the 2014 New Roots competition at St Albans, Speldosa and Alex Cumming and Nicola Beazley.

Speldosa

Speldosa are a clarsach (harp), fiddle, hammered dulcimer and vocal trio who perform their own arrangements of traditional and modern tunes and songs. Speldosa is Swedish for ‘music box’, so expect a beautiful twinkly sound together with passionate songs and toe-tapping tunes.

Alex and Nicola

Alex and Nicola

Alex Cumming and Nicola Beazley are an exciting new box and fiddle duo performing songs and tunes from around England. They are both recent graduates of the Newcastle Folk and Traditional Music Degree. Expect plenty of lively tunes, spine-tingling arrangements and lots of sing-along choruses.

Singers and players are welcome to come along and take part in the song session – listeners also appreciated! Tickets £3 (£2 members) on the door. Bring your own drinks – fine ales available nearby and teas and coffee from the kitchen.

Alex Cumming and Rosie Calvert (of The Teacups) will be leading a harmony workshop from 10 till noon on Saturday 28 June. All welcome. Tickets £3 (£2 club members). Teas and coffee available in the kitchen.

 

Showcase with the Zimmer Follies on Friday 30 May

IMG_4640Song session showcase with two spots from our favourite supergroup the Zimmer Follies (otherwise known as Mauny Woods, Peter Colman, John Mathews, Colin Tait and Roger Gamble). These much loved veterans of the local folk scene present their multiple musical talents, together with a large measure of good humour.

Other performers and listeners are also very welcome at the session. Downstairs. Free entry. Bring your own drinks – pubs nearby – or enjoy a cuppa from the kitchen.

Pilgrims’ Way on 5 October

Pilgrims’ Way

Pilgrims’ Way are named for the Rudyard Kipling poem, set to music by Peter Bellamy. They are Edwin Beasant (melodeons, guitar, bass) with Lucy Wright (vocals, jews harp, second fiddle) and Tom Kitching (fiddle, mandolin, reluctant vocals).

Their influences individually are many and varied, but they share a deep respect for the tradition and take as their inspiration some of the most influential bands from the 60s/70s revival.Their aim is to present gimmick-free English folk of the finest kind.

Pilgrims’ Way were nominated for the Horizon Award at the 2012 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. They were also winners of the FATEA Tradition award 2011 and nominated for the Spiral Earth Awards 2012 for best debut album.

In support is the winner of the Welsh Young Performers’ Award 2012 and a nominee for the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award 2012, Sunjay Brayne. An accomplished guitarist, Sunjay was one of most outstanding New Roots finalists this year.

Summer singarounds

There will be singarounds every Friday throughout the summer, with ‘Games and Pastimes’ as the theme on Friday 22 July and ‘Murder and Mayhem’ on Friday 19 August. Songs and tunes connected with the theme will be appreciated, but some leeway is allowed! Everyone is welcome to all singarounds, whether to sing, play or listen, and entry is free. Bring refreshments. Hot drinks available.
